I’ve been a Computer Tutor for 12 years. I specialize in teaching beginning and intermediate computer users. Here’s what I teach:
- Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP
- Mac Skills – Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, and Snow Leopard
- Email and Internet
- Organizing Files, Folders, and Photos
- Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn
- Gmail, Mac Mail, and Outlook.com mail
- Google Calendar, Mac Calendar, and Outlook.com Calendar
- Google Docs word processing
- Microsoft Publisher and OneNote
- Quicken for PCs
- Other General Skills
I tutor both remotely and in-person. The program I use to tutor remotely keeps your computer very secure. We can both see and move around on your computer screen while we talk on the phone. That way I can show you exactly what to do. My clients really like it and say it’s almost like being in person.
I’ve taught people all across the U.S. and can tutor around the world using Skype. The cost for remote tutoring is $10 for each 15 minutes, with only a 15-minute minimum. If you don’t like it after a few minutes, there’s no charge. I take credit cards, PayPal, and checks.
I meet in-person clients at a coffee place near my home in West Los Angeles. You need a laptop for these lessons. My rate for in-person tutoring is $50 per hour.
In addition, I answer questions via email for a small fee. The fee depends upon the question’s complexity. This is a great way to learn a little or get small problems solved.
Before I became a Computer Tutor I worked in the technology department at BizBuyer.com. I also have a B.A. in journalism and worked as a Staff Reporter for the Los Angeles Business Journal for six years. Several years ago I combined my skills to write and publish the book A Very Very Beginner’s Guide to Using Computers.
I’ve tutored adults of all ages, from their 20s to their 90s. In addition, I’ve taught beginning classes at Oasis, a school for seniors in West Los Angeles. And I’m a member of both Mensa and the West Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce.

“Kara is a godsend when it comes to teaching me how to be a competent computer user. She is very patient and listens carefully to questions and then gives clear, well-articulated answers. When something is particularly difficult she simply fixes the problem herself remotely, making her support fast, painless, and you are back to business in no time. I highly recommend Kara the Computer Tutor.”

“… She’s amazing! She was able to get on my computer remotely and see what I was doing (wrong). She solved all my problems quickly. I sent her an email that listed the issues in advance so she did her homework ahead of time and only charged me for the time on the phone so it was super productive, She taught me a ton and had a great sense of humor…”

“It is a great source of comfort to have Kara in my life. She is not only a fine teacher, but an excellent problem solver as well.”

“I recently purchased a new computer. Not only is all the software different than on my old computer, but I also wanted to use a different web browser, homepage, email system, etc So I had a lot of new stuff that I didn’t know how to use. After two telephone sessions with Kara, I am up to speed. She helps set up files, download programs and make suggestions on shortcuts, etc. The “teach by telephone” method she uses is the best. Both the teacher and the student have access to the cursor, so she can show you how to do something or you can ask questions about what you’re doing… She is thorough, patient and well prepared. I highly recommend her service.”
